Working principle of weathering steel
For weathering steels, the rusting process produces a stable rust layer of specific alloying elements that is attached to the base metal and has far fewer pores. This rusting "copper rust" forms under alternating wetting and drying conditions, forming a protective barrier that prevents oxygen, moisture and contaminants from further entering at a much lower corrosion rate than normal structural steel. In the right conditions, weathering steel will form an attached protective rust "copper rust" that inhibits further corrosion. Bridges manufactured from painted weathering steel can reach a design life of 120 years, providing an attractive economic solution with very low maintenance costs.
Weathering steel manufacturing process
Weathering steel generally adopts the process routes of concentrate feeding - smelting (converter, electric furnace - microalloying treatment - argon blowing -LF refining - low superheat continuous casting (feeding rare earth wire)- controlled rolling and controlled cooling. In smelting, scrap steel along with the charge into the furnace, according to the conventional process smelting, steel after adding deoxidizer and alloy, molten steel after blowing argon treatment, then casting, blowing argon temperature after the molten steel cast slab by continuous casting machine. With the addition of rare earth elements, the weathering steel is purified and the inclusion content is greatly reduced.
